Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) MLA Jairam Mahato has announced a one-day waterless fast on August 9 in support of students protesting over the ongoing JPSC-JSSC recruitment dispute in Jharkhand.

Speaking to India Today, Mahato said he would begin the nirjala anshan at 6 am on Sunday at the Old Assembly premises in Ranchi as a mark of solidarity with students, who have been staging protests and a hunger strike for the past 15 days at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium.

The students have been demanding a resolution to issues related to recruitment through the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). Despite multiple rounds of talks between the state government and the protesting students, no concrete solution has emerged so far.

Announcing his decision, Mahato said he would observe the day-long fast to strengthen the students’ movement and press the government to address their concerns. He added that his fast would continue for one day, beginning on the morning of August 9.

The JLKM legislator also indicated that his support for the agitation would continue beyond the symbolic protest. He said that after the ongoing Assembly session concludes on August 12, he would intensify the movement in support of the students if their demands remain unresolved.

The JPSC-JSSC recruitment issue has triggered widespread protests in Jharkhand, with aspirants alleging irregularities and delays in the recruitment process. The ongoing agitation has drawn support from several political leaders and organisations, adding pressure on the state government to find a resolution.
