A jobseeker revealed how a simple change in strategy landed him interview opportunities after more than 200 unsuccessful job applications, prompting others to share similar experiences.
The story was shared in a Reddit post on r/interviews titled, “200+ applications, 0 interviews. 4 LinkedIn messages changed everything.”
In the post, the user said they had graduated two months ago and spent weeks applying for over 200 jobs, only to receive no interview calls.

Determined to try a different approach, the graduate decided to reach out directly to hiring managers and employees on LinkedIn after submitting applications. Instead of messaging dozens of people, they contacted just four professionals.
The results, they said, were immediate. Out of those four messages, they received two referrals and one interview invitation.
While acknowledging that the method may not work every time, the Redditor said it had already proved to be far more effective than simply clicking the “Apply” button and waiting for a response.
Encouraging other jobseekers to give it a try, they advised candidates to politely connect with recruiters, hiring managers or employees after applying for a role, saying that even if it doesn’t always result in a referral, it can significantly improve the chances of getting noticed.

The post struck a chord with other jobseekers, many of whom said networking had often been more effective than relying solely on online applications.
Some shared that sending a brief, polite message to recruiters after applying had led to quick responses, while others said meaningful conversations frequently opened more doors than submitting hundreds of applications.
Several users also recalled landing their first jobs through referrals or LinkedIn outreach, agreeing that combining networking with traditional applications was often a far more successful job-hunting strategy.
