For 18 years, a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) driver spent his working days behind the wheel. But on his final day of duty, it was the bus he had driven for years that received an emotional goodbye from him.

Paul Kurien, who had served as a driver with the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) for 18 years, had been driving a particular bus on the Idukki-Kumily route for the last eight years.

Videos recorded by his friends at the depot showed Paul standing beside the bus before leaving for the final time. In an emotional moment, he leaned towards the vehicle and kissed it goodbye, bringing an end to years of his daily journeys behind its wheel.

The video was recorded by his colleagues at the depot and later went viral on social media, with many viewers touched by the simple farewell.

Paul is scheduled to officially retire from service on October 31. However, Tuesday was his last working day, after which he was set to remain on leave until his retirement.

The video also caught the attention of Chief Minister of Kerala V. D. Satheesan, who shared his reaction to Paul’s farewell.

Satheesan said he was deeply moved by the way Kurien bowed in reverence to the bus he had driven with dedication for years.

He said the commitment and pride of thousands of KSRTC workers like Kurien formed the backbone of Kerala’s public transport system. He also said the government remained committed to modernising KSRTC while protecting and strengthening its role as the state’s lifeline.

For Paul Kurien, however, the farewell appeared to be much simpler: one final moment with the bus that had been part of his life for years.
