Kerala CM VD Satheesan on Friday called for changes to existing laws to strengthen copyright protection and deal with new challenges arising from artificial intelligence. He said piracy was badly affecting the film industry and that stronger legal safeguards were needed for the sector.
Speaking after inaugurating a seminar on Music, Cinema and Law: Exploring the Intersections of Art, Culture and Law, Satheesan said films involved huge investments and the creative efforts of several people.

He said the law should be amended to protect the industry from piracy.
He also said the growing use of AI to create music, images and videos had brought new problems, including deepfakes and security threats.
The creation of fake visuals of prominent personalities using AI and their spread through social media showed the need for a legal framework that could respond to new technological challenges, he said.
Satheesan also stressed the importance of art and artists. He said art gives people an opportunity to rise above, even if only for a while, various difficulties in life and experience moments of joy.
The seminar is being jointly organised by the Kerala Judicial Academy and the National University of Advanced Legal Studies till September 13. It is discussing current legal issues related to music, cinema, copyright, AI, digital platforms and creative rights.
Supreme Court judge Justice V Mohan was the chief guest, while Higher Education Minister R Bindu was present.
Kerala High Court Chief Justice Soumen Sen said law, music and cinema might appear to be separate fields, but were closely linked to human behaviour and emotions. While art expresses human experiences, law seeks to regulate and protect them, he said.
Sen also spoke about music as a cultural expression that carries a society’s memories, protests, language and identity, while also offering solace in a world marked by conflict and tension.
The seminar brought together discussions on how law can respond to piracy, AI and changing digital platforms, while speakers also underlined the role of art, music and cinema in reflecting and protecting human experience.
