Two foreign women who were allegedly abducted and gangraped in Lahore last week have left for Europe after completing the necessary legal formalities, Punjab Police said on Sunday. The case became high-profile after one of the arrested suspects was identified as Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar’s grandson.

Lahore Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Faisal Kamran told a press conference that the women underwent medical examinations after giving their consent, and their statements were recorded with the help of their respective embassies before they left for Europe.

Police said the two women, one from the Netherlands and the other from Venezuela, were allegedly abducted by a group of men on June 29 and gangraped. Kamran identified Muhammad Raza Dar, Ishaq Dar’s grandson, as the prime suspect in the case.

According to the police, Raza Dar had met the two women in Singapore last year and they were partners in a cryptocurrency venture. He had arranged business visas for their visit to Pakistan. Police have arrested four more suspects, taking the total number of arrests in the case to eight.

The other suspects were identified as Hassan Raza, Sikandar Khan and Sajid Ali. They have been arrested and are on physical remand till July. Kamran said more suspects have been arrested, but did not disclose their names. The accused have been booked under sections 365A and 375A of the Pakistan Penal Code.

On Saturday, Pakistani senator Faisal Vawda, who has close links to the country’s military establishment, demanded Ishaq Dar’s resignation after his grandson’s arrest. The case centres on the alleged abduction and gangrape of the two foreign women, with police saying eight suspects have been arrested so far and the women have since returned to Europe after completing legal formalities.
