For a software engineer in his late 20s, finding a new job after months of unemployment was supposed to be a fresh start. Instead, it ended in another layoff barely 2.5 months after he joined.
In a post on Reddit, the engineer shared how he had lost his previous job towards the end of last year. It took him six months to find another role, one that came with what he described as a decent package.

After months of searching, he thought he was finally getting back on track. Then, he was laid off again.
“I joined the new company, doing my work, and barely 2.5 months later, I was laid off again today along with around dozens of people in our company,” he wrote.
According to the employee, the decision had nothing to do with his performance. The company cited organisational cost-cutting and restructuring.
“But honestly, that doesn’t make it feel any less devastating,” he added.

Losing a job once had already meant months of uncertainty. Going through it again within a year has left the engineer questioning whether he can build a stable career in software.
“Two layoffs within a year have completely shaken my confidence and made me question whether software engineering is still a sustainable career for me,” he wrote.
The financial pressure makes the decision harder. He said he does not come from a well-off family that can support a long break or give him the freedom to experiment with a different career.
He has also had to leave his hometown and move wherever he could find work to build a career and support himself.

The engineer’s concerns extend beyond repeated job cuts. He also worries about how artificial intelligence could affect software jobs.
“I know AI isn’t necessarily replacing every developer,” he wrote, but said companies cutting costs and restructuring around AI and productivity had made the future feel uncertain.
Now, he is considering leaving software engineering for a career that offers more stability.
He turned to other workers who had faced similar setbacks, asking: “If you’ve been laid off multiple times, changed careers after working in software, or managed to rebuild your career after a situation like this — what did you do?”
He ended his post by saying he was “devastated” and trying to figure out what direction to take next.
