New Delhi: The Narendra Modi-led Centre thwarted the call for protest at Jantar Mantar to press for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with the Delhi Police detaining over 7,000 protesters, including Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Abhijit Dipke, Saurav Das, Ashutosh Rana, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, AISA president Neha Bora, opposition parties with four former chief ministers and scores of journalists, lawyers and citizens.

Dipke, Das and Ranka were detained as soon as the plane touched down at Delhi Airport. In a pre-recorded video message, Dipke said the organisation’s in-charge, Ajinkya Shinde, would lead its protest at Jantar Mantar. The CJP asserted that the protest would continue nationwide, with or without its leaders.

They were taken to an undisclosed location.

The Opposition likened the situation to one worse than the Emergency. “This has gone beyond an Emergency; it has become a Super Emergency,” Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Banerjee said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi urged the youth to “keep protesting” and asserted that “we are going to ensure that this regime and the people who have attacked the Constitution are defeated”.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk said he would consider launching a peaceful protest, including a hunger strike or a march in Leh or Delhi, if the detainees were not released within 24 hours.
