71st over – Jansen over the wicket to Renshaw

By Jon Healy

How many more overs will Jansen and Nortje bowl here, with the new ball coming in 10 overs? Remembering that Wiaan Mulder and Jansen opened the bowling on day one.

Excellent areas from Jansen outside off to Renshaw, who leaves it alone well.

Jansen strays too straight and Renshaw helps himself to a single off his pads. It looked like two runs might have been available, but Keshav Maharaj does enough to convince the Aussies it’s not worth the risk.

Jansen’s angle across Cummins seems to be causing him some issues. He doesn’t look very assured, but he manages to make it through.

70th over – Nortje is firing up

By Jon Healy

Credit to Cummins for constantly getting in behind these short balls. He’s a properly brave batter.

And he’s able to work off his pads through mid-wicket for three runs. AND THAT BRINGS UP 200 FOR AUSTRALIA!

A huge mental victory for the Aussies with the second new ball 10 overs away.

Renshaw works a short ball to the leg side for a single in a manner unconvincing enough to suggest a short leg may not be far off.

A change in tactic for Cummins as third man is removed and the skipper decides to back away and look to lift one over the slips.

And straight away Temba Bavuma puts third man back in place. Anrich Nortje comes around the wicket with a leg slip and short leg in place too.

It’s short, unsurprisingly, but well negotiated by Cummins.

69th over – Cummins in the firing line

By Jon Healy

Marco Jansen comes around the wicket and fires in a very well directed short ball that Cummins wears on the left glove. That’s a little unsettling for a fast bowler to be sure.

Cummins is showing bravery here, but Jansen is executing the short-ball strategy perfectly, making sure to mix in full and length balls to find and beat the outside edge.

Great running by Cummins and Renshaw as Cummins pushes to mid-on and takes off for a single.

Jansen finishes with a gorgeous ball swinging down the line of off stump. Renshaw is driving on the walk and the ball squirts out to the off side.

68th over – Nortje to Cummins

By Jon Healy

Can we expect some short stuff? The first is a little short and wide, but Cummins picks out the point fielder.

There’s the short ball we were expecting, and Cummins gets a little lucky as he’s jumping and fending at it.

The next one is full and Cummins edges away to fine leg.

Renshaw’s being peppered too, but is a tall man and picking it up early. He doesn’t seem keen to take it on with a horizontal bat just yet though.

67th over – Marco Jansen starts his second day

By Jon Healy

And Renshaw starts defensively in the battle of the lefties.

There’s still a lot of movement away from the left-hander off the seam from Jansen. Renshaw isn’t chasing them, to his credit.

We’ve seen a few deliveries that Head and Maddinson would slash at and risk chopping on, but Renshaw is happy to leave them alone.

66th over – We’ve got to finish this one off

By Jon Healy

After yesterday’s early finish, Anrich Nortje has four balls left in this set.

Matt Renshaw has the strike on 46 not out.

Nortje starts brilliantly across Renshaw, who leaves one tight to the off stump.

Edged! And that will be the fifty!

Faith in the tail

By Jon Healy

Hello Jon, fingers crossed these two can survive the first half hour and get settled again – And we’ve still got Mitch Starc and the GOAT to come, not to mention the anchor in the tail Josh Hazelwood!

– Mike

Hi Mike,

You probably have a bit more faith in the batting ability of Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood than I do, but it will be an interesting watch to see how Matt Renshaw bats with the tail if he gets that far.

Aussies out of order on opening day at Kingsmead

By Jon Healy

When Nic Maddinson was named in the XI, it wasn’t immediately clear what the batting order would be.

Once he was elevated to open, things only got worse.

Russell Jackson broke it all down.
