Before we head to the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome, let’s recap yesterday, shall we?
All the focus leading into the Games was on whether former Australian-turned Englishman Matt Richardson would come back and haunt the riders he once rode with to Olympic, Commonwealth and World success.
In the end, he wasn’t even there, the victim of a truly egregious barge during a keirin race in Japan that ruled him out of the Games.
But that didn’t matter, as the Aussie sprinters claimed victory over their deepest and most bitter rivals, England, in the team sprint.
It wasn’t all good for Australia though, as the Olympic champion team pursuit squad were beaten by England in what is considered the blue riband event of the track.
That came after British world champion Josh Charlton threw up over his team-mate’s bike after the qualifying run in which he came detached from the team and limped home.
He was subbed out, the English attempting a new line up on the fly.
And they prevailed in a thrilling final, sweet revenge for British silver medallists from Paris, Charlie Tanfield and Ethan Vernon.
