Liverpool have officially parted ways with head coach Arne Slot after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign that saw the Reds finish fifth in the Premier League and narrowly secure a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League. The decision comes just a year after the Dutchman guided the club to the league title in his debut season at Anfield.

Slot’s departure marks a dramatic turn in fortunes for a manager who was hailed as the ideal successor to Jurgen Klopp after delivering immediate success following his arrival from Feyenoord in 2024.

“We have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward. Again, it must be stressed that this is not a decision which has been reached lightly, anything but,” Liverpool said in a statement announcing the decision.

Despite the disappointment of the recently concluded season, Slot leaves Anfield with his reputation enhanced by the Premier League triumph he delivered in his first year. However, Liverpool’s title defence quickly unravelled this season as inconsistent performances, failure to win domestic silverware and a prolonged battle for a Champions League spot ultimately convinced the club hierarchy that a change was needed.

“That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying. The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and – most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves – successful,” the club added.

WHO WILL BE SLOT’S SUCCESSOR?

Former Feyenoord boss Slot was appointed in 2024 to succeed Klopp, becoming only the second permanent Liverpool manager in nearly a decade. His debut campaign exceeded expectations as Liverpool reclaimed the Premier League title, but the momentum failed to carry over into his second season.

Liverpool’s struggles were evident across multiple competitions. The Reds never seriously challenged for the league title, exited cup competitions without silverware and spent much of the campaign fighting to secure a top-five finish.

The club confirmed that the process of appointing a new manager is already underway. According to media reports, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has emerged as a leading candidate after guiding the south-coast club to a sixth-place finish and a historic first qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

Liverpool’s next appointment will be viewed as one of the most significant decisions of the post-Klopp era, with the club hoping to quickly return to competing for major honours both domestically and in Europe.
