A Loch Ness Monster hunter has debunked claims a “family of Nessies” was spotted from space.
Julie Fraser, from the north east of England, was looking at the area using Google Earth while doing research for an upcoming holiday to the famous Scottish tourist destination and she was stunned to see three objects in the water which looked like a “pod of whales” and she thought she may have stumbled across “a little family of Nessies”.
However, Steve Feltham, who lives on Loch Ness and devotes much of his time to hunting the elusive creature, has studied the image and he’s convinced Julie actually saw three canoes in the water. During an appearance on NewsNation, he explained: “That photograph, lovely as it is, there is nothing that I’ve ever seen that looks more like three Canadian canoes.
“If you look closely at each canoe, you can see a little protuberance and a splash of water. That’s the paddle action. There’s two people in each canoe.”
Steve admitted that although he thinks Julie’s image does not show the Loch Ness Monster, he’s still convinced Nessie is out there waiting to be found.
He said: “I’ve dedicated my life to this mystery, trying to find the answers. And I suppose part of what I do is also disproving the things that are false alarms.”
Julie’s story hit headlines after she reported the sighting. She told the Inverness Courier: “Last weekend I opened Google Earth to look around the Clan Fraser cemetery on the east shore of the loch – I’m planning a visit to Inverness later in the year and was just playing when I spotted the three objects. “Taking a closer look and enlarging the images they really do look like a pod of whales.”
Julie explained there is no way to date the image using Goggle Earth but it looks like it is from 2026 and must be recent because the trees are full and green.
She went on to explain the objects she spotted look strange because they don’t appear to be leaving a wake.
She added: “There’s an image of a pleasure boat with a wake but no wake from the three things. They don’t like like boats and look like whales or something similar with an arc to their back.
“I’m not a crank. I’m not as familiar as probably local people but it definitely looks like something significant to me … I had a look yesterday and they’re still there. The thought of a little family of Nessies is so exciting.”
Julie submitted her sighting to the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register and is waiting to hear whether her discovery will be accepted and recorded by the organisation.
As well as recording in-person sightings, the organisation also logs any mysterious sightings made via a web camera which is trained on the waters of the fabled site.
