The Lucknow Municipal Corporation on Sunday began bulldozer action against illegal chambers of lawyers after the structures were not removed within the deadline set by the civic body.

The action follows an order from the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court, after which the Municipal Corporation issued notices directing lawyers to remove the encroachments. The lawyers later approached the Supreme Court, but the court declined to intervene.

NOTICES ISSUED TO AROUND 200 CHAMBERS

The Municipal Corporation had pasted notices on approximately 200 lawyers’ chambers, directing them to voluntarily remove encroachments.

The notices concerned illegal permanent structures, including lawyers’ chambers and food stalls, allegedly built by encroaching upon drains, roads, footpaths and government land.

The lawyers were given August 29 as the deadline to remove the encroaching structures voluntarily. As the structures remained in place after the deadline, the administration scheduled the removal for Sunday, August 30.

LAWYERS ARRIVE AS ACTION BEGINS

The bulldozer action began in Lucknow on Sunday, with lawyers arriving at the site despite it being a holiday as preparations were made to remove the encroaching structures.

The Municipal Corporation had also pasted fresh notices on the chambers as part of preparations for the action.

Meanwhile, a team from the electricity department arrived at the site, with power supply to the structures being disconnected as the demolition action got underway.

The action comes after no relief was granted by the High Court and follows the directions of the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court regarding the encroaching structures.
