It’s Mahesh Babu’s birthday, and the internet got quite the treat! The makers made the occasion even more special by unveiling fresh pictures of the actor’s looks from Varanasi, offering the first proper glimpse of his much-awaited character, Rudhra.
Set against the stunning landscapes of Africa, Mahesh looks every bit the larger-than-life hero Rajamouli has been creating. Varanasi, which also stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is among the most anticipated Indian films lined up for 2027.

The images present Rudhra as a mix of wit, vulnerability and fierceness. Shot during the film’s Africa schedule across Kilimanjaro and the Masai Mara, the pictures hint at a character driven by a purpose far greater than himself and a destiny he never asked for.
The breathtaking African wilderness takes centre stage in the images. In one picture, Mahesh’s Rudhra gazes at the vast landscape, while another shows him relaxing on a bamboo raft.
While the makers have kept Varanasi’s plot details largely under wraps, a reported synopsis has surfaced online. According to a Gulte report, the film is set in 2027, when an asteroid named Shambhavi is reportedly on a collision course with Varanasi, threatening the city with a catastrophic impact.
Mahesh Babu is set to play Rudhra, an archaeologist and explorer recruited for a high-stakes mission to recover an ancient cosmic artefact. He is joined by Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ Mandakini, a historian and skilled marksman, as they embark on a dangerous journey.
The reported synopsis reads that in 2027, the world faces an existential threat as a massive asteroid named Shambhavi heads towards the holy city of Varanasi. Rudhra is then brought on board for a globetrotting mission to retrieve an ancient cosmic artefact, with Mandakini accompanying him.
Their quest reportedly takes them across Africa, Antarctica and Europe, while Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Kumbha serves as the antagonist.
The makers have not officially confirmed the reported synopsis or these plot details.
Directed by SS Rajamouli, Varanasi is slated to release in theatres on April 7, 2027.
