A man has died after a fall at Hanging Rock on Friday afternoon, with police confirming he could not be revived.
The incident happened just before 1pm at the summit of the well-known volcanic formation, about 75 kilometres northwest of Melbourne. Police believe the man fell while climbing onto a rock.
“Despite the efforts of several off-duty medical professionals at the scene, the man was unable to be revived and was declared deceased at the scene,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
Near the end of the day, Hanging Rock Reserve was closed and is expected to remain closed on Saturday.
Hanging Rock, near Woodend in the Macedon Ranges, is one of Victoria’s best-known landmarks.
Also known as Ngannelong, it is widely recognised through Joan Lindsay’s novel Picnic at Hanging Rock and the 1975 film adaptation, and is popular for walks, day trips and events.
