Chaos erupted at Gwalior’s Gajra Raja Medical College (GRMC) trauma centre after Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav left the facility. Dean Dr RKS Dhakad was briefing the media about injured patients when Mukesh Sharma allegedly slapped him. People at the scene then surrounded Mukesh, beat him with hands and feet, kicked him and knocked him to the ground before assaulting him on the road.

After the beating, Mukesh repeatedly shouted, “I am mad, I am mad,” while alleging that corruption was rampant in Gwalior.

The incident has raised questions about the motive behind the attack, the identity of those who thrashed Mukesh and security arrangements at the trauma centre.

FROM ALLEGED SLAPPING TO A STREET BEATING

Police intervened and rescued Mukesh from the crowd before taking him into custody. A police contingent, including the Additional Superintendent of Police and the station house officer, was present at the time. However, reports suggest that a significant part of the force had left after the Chief Minister’s convoy departed, raising questions about security at the facility.

It remains unclear who beat Mukesh after the alleged attack on the dean. The people involved could have been doctors, junior doctors, trauma centre staff or employees associated with the dean’s office. Their identities and individual roles have not yet been established.

POLICE PROBE MOTIVE BEHIND ATTACK

City Superintendent of Police Robin Jain said Mukesh was taken into custody immediately after the incident. Police are investigating why he allegedly attacked the dean and whether the assault was spontaneous or someone else was involved.

According to Jain, Mukesh disclosed certain details during questioning, which are being examined. An FIR and further legal action will follow after the police receive a written complaint from the concerned party.

Anil Mahaur, Assistant Superintendent at the trauma centre of Jaya Arogya Hospital, said the dean was briefing the media about injured patients after the Chief Minister’s visit when an unidentified man suddenly attacked him. People present at the scene tried to protect the dean and handed the accused over to the police.

Mahaur called for strict action against the attacker and anyone else found to be involved.

DEAN SAYS PATIENT CARE WON’T BE AFFECTED

Speaking after the incident, Dr Dhakad said he did not know the attacker or understand what had prompted him to strike. He expressed faith in the police and called for an impartial investigation.

“I have 100 per cent faith in the police,” he said, adding that the motive and any possible involvement of others would have to be established through the probe.

Dhakad said he had heard that the man had previously been involved in disputes with government officials, police personnel and an Additional District Magistrate. However, he said these claims needed to be verified. He declined to name anyone or speculate about a possible conspiracy, saying he did not want to make baseless allegations.

The dean said he had not anticipated the attack and generally felt safe moving around the hospital alone, both during the day and at night. He added that he had also spoken to the Superintendent of Police and was confident that the police would investigate the matter.

Dhakad stressed that the incident would not disrupt medical services. Doctors had been working around the clock to treat those injured in the Sheetla Mata temple accident, he said, adding that patients should not suffer because of the incident.

He said he would continue working alongside his team of doctors and ensure that patient care remained unaffected.

ADVOCATE MANOJ SHARMA HAS BEEN IN THE SPOTLIGHT BEFORE

The name of advocate Manoj Sharma has emerged in connection with the alleged slapping of the GRMC dean. He has reportedly been linked to an alleged attack on an Additional District Magistrate in Gwalior, with several cases said to have been registered against him at police stations across the city.

His name also reportedly surfaced in connection with an incident in 2011 in which a shoe was thrown at former Union minister Suresh Kalmadi, who was associated with the Commonwealth Games. In 2014, he was also linked to an incident in Delhi involving ink being thrown at Sahara chief Subrata Roy.

Following the incident at GRMC, Manoj Sharma has once again come into the spotlight.

The police investigation will have to establish why the dean was attacked, who assaulted Mukesh after the alleged slapping, and whether his allegations of corruption were linked to any specific complaint or dispute. The answers remain unclear.
