Three elderly people are fighting for life after a brutal axe attack at a Tyers property sparked a major police manhunt on Saturday.
The victims, all believed to be elderly, were attacked at a home on Cowies Road in the small Gippsland town near Traralgon about 12.30pm.
Police believe the man, who was known to the victims, went to the property before allegedly assaulting the three with what is believed to be an axe.
After the attack, the man fled the scene, with the injured victims able to call emergency services for help.
All three victims suffered critical injuries. Two men are expected to be flown to hospital in Melbourne with life-threatening injuries, while a woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
A large-scale search is now underway as police hunt for the attacker, who is believed to have left the property on foot.
The man, aged in his 50s, was last seen wearing a black and mustard-coloured jacket and carrying a black backpack.
Police have warned he may still be armed with an axe and a handsaw.
Anyone who sees the man has been urged not to approach him and to call triple-0 immediately.
