An all-round captain’s effort from Damien Burrage was not enough to get Rockingham-Mandurah over Claremont-Nedlands in the opening round of the Premier Cricket season on Saturday.
Burrage took three wickets in the 50-over contest at Lark Hill and scored a battling 47 before he was run out in the chase, as the Mariners were bowled out for 119, well short of Claremont-Nedlands’ 225-run target.
Star signing and former WA captain Sam Whiteman did not feature in the line-up for the Mariners.
Claremont-Nedlands won the toss and elected to bat, and openers Lochie Hardy and Sean Thompson put the Mariners’ attack to the sword with a century opening stand before captain Hardy was dismissed for 62 with the score at 116.
Thompson went on to notch up his own century before being dismissed on 102. Burrage took three middle-order wickets as Claremont-Nedlands eased their way to 225, a target the Mariners would have been confident of being able to overcome.
However, they got off to the worst possible start, with WA-contracted seamer Liam Haskett removing openers Aaron Burrage for one and debutant Tyne Dodds for three to leave Rockingham-Mandurah teetering at 2-7.
WA-contracted rookie Corey Walsley (22) steadied the ship but Rufus Zampatti sparked a collapse when he dismissed Walsley, followed by Mitch Oliver for a golden duck and Charles Kunje for eight, the loss of three wickets for one run putting the game almost out of reach at 4-37.
Damien Burrage hit 47 and Sumit Yadav an unbeaten 17 but the Mariners were bowled out for 119 in the 40th over, as Haskett added two more wickets to finish with 4-11 off 7.5 overs.
The Mariners take on Joondalup away in round two this weekend.
