Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate India’s passenger vehicle market in August 2026, but the battle for the positions below it saw some notable changes. Tata Motors strengthened its hold on second place, while Hyundai, Kia and Mahindra recorded strong year-on-year growth. Kia also moved ahead of Toyota to claim fifth place among the country’s biggest carmakers.
Maruti Suzuki
Maruti Suzuki’s domestic passenger vehicle sales climbed 34.8 percent to 1,76,971 units in August. SUVs and MPVs such as the Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Ertiga, e Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, Victoris and XL6 accounted for 79,045 units. The compact and midsize car categories contributed another 77,166 units, while the Alto and S-Presso together added 8,799 units. Eeco sales stood at 11,961 units.

Including exports and OEM sales, Maruti’s overall August tally reached 2,19,220 units. The company also crossed the one-million-unit mark in total sales during the first five months of FY2027.
Tata Motors
Tata Motors posted the strongest growth among the top three, with domestic passenger vehicle volumes rising 59 percent to 65,253 units. The company’s electric vehicle business also continued to gain momentum, with combined domestic and international EV sales reaching 16,549 units, compared with 8,540 units in August 2025.
Tata has also raised prices across its passenger vehicle range from September 1.
Mahindra
Mahindra sold 59,257 passenger vehicles in August, registering 50 percent annual growth. Its overall vehicle sales, including exports, stood at 1,07,648 units, an increase of 42 percent.
The month saw Mahindra expand its portfolio with the updated Scorpio N and BE 6 Sporteq. It also rolled out its Battery-as-a-Service programme for the XEV 9e and XEV 9S.
Hyundai
Hyundai recorded its highest-ever August domestic sales at 54,396 units, representing 23.6 percent growth over August 2025. The company has introduced an assured buyback scheme for the Creta Electric and will increase vehicle prices by up to 1 percent from September.
Kia
Kia enjoyed its strongest August since entering the Indian market, dispatching 29,042 units. Sales were up 48.1 percent year on year, with the Seltos and Sonet remaining key contributors. The newly introduced Syros EV also added to the company’s volumes.
Toyota
Toyota was one of the few major manufacturers to report a decline, with August domestic sales falling 3 percent to 28,410 units. The company is nevertheless expecting demand to strengthen during the festive period, with models such as the Innova Hycross, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Glanza continuing to anchor its lineup.
JSW MG Motor
JSW MG Motor India closed the month with 7,508 units, recording 12.3 percent annual growth. Its biggest August development was the debut of the Hector Tomahawk in EV and PHEV forms. Bookings are already open, with EV deliveries due to start in September and PHEV test drives and deliveries scheduled for November.
