Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to relocate their family back to the UK has raised many questions and new details may shed some light on what has motivated the shock move.
Just one day after news of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s u-turn spread, sources told news.com.au that Meghan had been offered a role in an upcoming project being developed in the UK.
The nature of the project remains a closely guarded secret, with no details yet released about the production, Meghan’s potential role or when filming could take place.
But the timing of the offer has fuelled speculation that Meghan’s professional plans could be playing a part in the couple’s return to Britain after the pair moved to California in 2020 following their dramatic exit from royal duties.
The offer has not been publicly confirmed by Meghan or Prince Harry, or their representatives.
Before marrying Prince Harry in 2018, Meghan was best known for her acting career, particularly her role as Rachel Zane in Suits.
She subsequently stepped away from acting as her royal role took centre stage.
The Duke and Duchess’ plan to relocate with their children, Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, therefore represents a significant change for the family.
While their children’s education and the opportunity to spend more time in Britain have been cited as potential factors, Meghan’s reported new opportunity adds another layer to speculation.
Meghan and Prince Harry are understood to have enrolled Archie and Lilibet into a school where they will start their British education in September.
The location of their new British residence and Archie and Lilibet’s school are being kept private.
The family won’t be setting up their renewed life in the UK at the home in Windsor Castle they were “asked to vacate” in 2022 and will instead be living in a “non-royal residence” outside of London.
But the family’s UK return does not mean they will turn their backs on their life in California completely, with the Duke and Duchess expected to split their time between the UK, their home in Montecito and a property they own in Portugal.
A return to royal duties will also not be on the cards for the couple, with King Charles indicating the couple will maintain their private lives to continue pursuing charity work and independent careers.
It also comes after a private meeting between Prince Harry and King Charles, suggesting their may be renewed efforts to maintain family connections.
For Prince Harry, returning to home soil could provide an opportunity to rebuild some of the family relationships that have suffered since his departure to the US.
Prince Harry and Meghan’s shock decision in 2020 — dubbed Megxit by the British press — caused an explosive rift between Prince Harry and his father and brother Prince William.
