India Police detained two men on Thursday, August 27, in Kathmandu, after at least 359 people were killed and hundreds more were missing following severe flash floods and landslides along the Bhotekoshi valley.

Authorities in Bharatpur, Chitwan, received a picture showing the alleged extortion from a system that had been swept in by the flood on Wednesday, August 26 in accordance with a media release from the city police department in Bharatpur, Chitwan. The men allegedly removed a gold necklace from the deceased’s ear using a long shaft to process the body before using a long pole.

Police acted on the picture and detained Umesh Chaudhary, 38, formerly from Sunsari area and residing close to Pokhara Bus Park in Bharatpur’s Ward No 2, and Madan Gurung, 25, who is originally from Nawalparasi area and currently residing in Bharatpur’s Ward No 1. According to the police statement, both were taken into custody close to Pokhara Bus Park in Bharatpur Metropolitan City, and more research is being conducted.
