Michael Douglas drunkenly told Julia Roberts to “stick” her Golden Globe “where the sun don’t shine” after she embraced his son Cameron during the awards bash in the 1990s.
The Hollywood legend recalled the interaction with the actress, who bagged the 1990 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role as Shelby Eatenton Latcherie in the 1989 romcom Steel Magnolias, in his memoir, One Helluva Ride.
Michael, now 82, who has Cameron, now 47, with his ex-wife Diandra Luker, wrote: “We were at the bar, and Julia had her arm around my son, kind of nuzzling him. To me, in that moment, he looked stunned…but I was pretty drunk.”
He then remembered telling Julia: “Take your hands off my son and take that Golden Globe and stick it where the sun don’t shine.”
Michael, who served as producer on her 1990 horror film Flatliners, was mortified when his producing partner called him the following morning about the incident.
The entertainer admitted: “I’d crossed a line with the most in-demand young actress in Hollywood.”
To make amends, Michael sent Julia, now 58, a bouquet of roses and gave an in-person apology to her and then-fiance and Flatliners co-star Kiefer Sutherland, now 59.
He remembered: “Luckily, they forgave me enough to get through that and finish the picture.”
Michael added: “I remained friends with Kiefer. Julia, not so much.”
His drunken interaction with Julia at the Golden Globes party is one of many revelations he makes in One Helluva Ride.
Michael confirmed he had a secret romance with Jeanne Tripplehorn while filming 1992’s erotic thriller Basic Instinct, while he was separated from Diandra.
And he recalled that all the speculation about him and Sharon Stone, now 68, meant no one noticed what was happening with his other co-star.
Michael wrote: “They were so focused on a possible relationship between Sharon and me, they missed the real relationship happening between me and Jeanne.”
He noted that the pair “took great paints to hide” their romance “from the cast and crew”.
Michael added: “[We] spent so many hours together, talking, really getting to know each other, enjoying each other’s company away from the set and everything else in the world.”
Elsewhere in the book, the Fatal Attraction alum admitted he “fell very hard for Jeanne despite our nearly twenty-year age difference”.
He continued: “I was crazy about her. But I was also just self-aware enough to know that the worst thing I could do at that moment after nearly twenty years of marriage was jump right into another serious relationship.
“My relationship with Jeanne lasted through production, then we went our separate ways. But I will always think of her as an amazing actress and a truly terrific woman that I was very fortunate to spend time with.”
Meanwhile, Michael has confirmed he made sure Jeanne, 63, was happy for him to reveal their romance in his book, given the time that’s passed, and her 26-year marriage to her 66-year-old husband, actor Leland Orser.
He told PEOPLE magazine: “It’s been a long time, but I called her up and asked for her permission. That’s her business. She said yes.”
Michael’s fling with Jeanne isn’t the only relationship he opened up about in the book.
He also told the story of how he and Kathleen Turner, now 72, fell for each other in secret during filming for 1984’s Romancing the Stone.
Kathleen has given her thoughts on the matter, telling People in a statement: “Good heavens, what a fuss about something 40 years ago! I love Michael, and I look forward to enjoying the book.”
