The family of Melbourne hiker Jordan Yap has confirmed that the 30-year-old, who went missing in Peru last month, has been found dead.
“With a heavy heart, we are sorry to tell you Jordan has been found, and he did not survive,” the family wrote on social media.
“We want to thank everyone who has helped; friends and family, the contributors, the search teams, the police, the many groups we engaged with who gave their time and effort, everyone who helped to share on social media. We are appreciative of all of you.
“Please remember Jordan as the vibrant man he was, and for the immense joy he brought to so many people’s lives.”
Yap, an intrepid adventurer, embarked on a solo hike through the remote Huayhuash mountain range on September 14, telling friends and family he would be off the grid for 10 days to complete the high-altitude trek.
The alarm was raised by his partner, Anita, when he failed to check in at his hotel and missed a scheduled flight several days later.
The Huayhuash circuit is known for its steep, rugged terrain and is considered one of Peru’s most challenging mountain routes.
Jordan’s family said he was an experienced traveller who had solo hiked across Australia, China, Turkey and Jordan.
“He’s an avid outdoor person. In winter time, he will spend most weekends on the snowfield. Even though he didn’t have a lot of luck with the weather, he loves hiking,” Yap’s father, Vinh Dao, said last month.
Yap’s family launched a desperate search with local mountain rescue organisation Socorro Andino Peruano after struggling to get in touch with Peruvian authorities.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Peru.
Peruvian media reported that Jordan’s body was found on Friday near the remote village of Machaycancha, in the northern section of the world-famous mountain range.
Loved ones have remembered Jordan as a giving and kind man
“I’ll think of you every time I pitch a tent, cook a particularly extravagant meal or have a boogie on the dance floor,” one mourner wrote in tribute.
