In response to the ongoing indefinite hunger strike by JNU students, which began on October 18 and ended its 17th day, CPI ( M ) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas has requested that President Droupadi Murmu and Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi intervene.

Brittas requested the removal of alleged objectionable sections of the Chief Proctor’s Office ( CPO ) Manual, the revocation of the rustication orders against elected Jawaharlal Nehru University Students ‘ Union ( JNUSU) representatives, and prompt resolution of student grievances.

” The current position is very worrying to me as a former JNU student. A school shouldn’t condemn those who foster disagreement and debate. The kids ‘ voices deserve to be heard, no silenced, according to him, and its political practices must be preserved.

Administration “did not handle concerns.”

According to Brittas, the starvation strike, which began on October 3, came as a result of the university’s reported failure to address the “genuine and historic problems” of the student body.

He claimed that major issues had been caused by the union’s representations of elected students, including the original JNUSU leader.

The absence of elected officials from the university has a direct impact on how the students ‘ union functions, he wrote, and it weakens the process by which individuals can voice their concerns collectively.

Brittas also raised concerns about the CPO Manual’s extended police, which forbids fines and punitive measures for a variety of protest and assembly methods.

He claimed that the school had long provided a forum for conversations, discussions, and political activities while he recalls his time at JNU. He urged students to avoid raising legitimate grievances because they fear punishment would result from significant disciplinary actions.

He also raised questions about unresolved issues in regards to gender equality, equal opportunity for admission, and simple campus amenities, claiming that the prolonged impasse had grown to such a high level given the dangers the hunger strike poses to the health of those affected.

According to Brittas, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Act, which included social justice, humanism, and a political way of life as the school’s guiding principles. The leader is designated as a school visitor by the act.

He urged President Murmu to act under Section 8 of the Act and take appropriate actions to reverse the CPO Manual’s reported unpleasant rules, rescind the rustication orders, and resolve the students ‘ outstanding problems in a timely manner.
