A man has been charged with murder after allegedly breaking into an elderly man’s home and attacking him.

Police were called to a house in the NSW outback town of Broken Hill about 2pm on September 13 to reports a man had been assaulted and robbed.

Officers found the 81-year-old resident in a critical condition with head injuries and fractured ribs.

He died in hospital around two weeks later.

A 38-year-old man was arrested in Dubbo the day after the attack and was initially charged with armed robbery, detaining a person with intent and causing grievous bodily harm.

On Tuesday, his charge was upgraded to murder.

Police will allege the 38-year-old broke into the 81-year-old’s house before threatening him, assaulting him and stealing his cash.

The elderly man was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Broken Hill Hospital in a critical condition.

The 38-year-old man is in custody and is due to face court later on Wednesday.
