Rashmika Mandanna is going where Indian cinema rarely lets its leading women go – and Mysaa gives us a first look at just how far she’s willing to push herself. The teaser has her taking on men, fighting through mud, diving underwater and even using a weapon in a brutal attack, all while playing a Gond woman. It’s a striking departure from the roles we’ve usually seen her in.

There’s barely a moment to catch your breath in the teaser. Rashmika’s character is seen throwing punches, getting drenched, walking through a waterfall and holding her breath underwater as she takes on her enemies. At one point, she appears to drive a weapon through someone’s head while still submerged. The imagery is raw and physical, and Rashmika carries it with a quiet intensity rather than playing the action for style alone.

The makers had promised a very different Rashmika when they announced Mysaa, and the teaser seems determined to make good on that. Sharing the footage, they described her as appearing in a “completely transformative and never-seen-before avatar”. One character in the teaser goes a step further, calling her “the bloody weapon who decides the war”.

That line perhaps says more about Mysaa than anything else in the teaser. She isn’t being introduced as someone caught in the middle of the action. She is the action.

Rashmika has already shown flashes of that fiercer side, particularly in Animal, but Mysaa appears to take her into much more physically demanding territory. The film combines hand-to-hand combat with a rugged setting, while the teaser hints at a character carrying plenty of emotional weight beneath all that violence.

The story is set against the culturally rich world of the Gond tribes, with Rashmika playing a Gond woman at its centre. The makers have described the film as an emotional action thriller, with its protagonist being “resilient by nature, fearless by choice” and “unbreakable by spirit”.

Mysaa is directed by debutant Rawindra Pulle, who has also co-written the screenplay with Rajkumar Kandamudi. The film features Eshwari Rao, Rahul Ravindran, Samuthirakani, Rao Ramesh, Shiva Kandukuri, Karthik Ranjini, Tarak Ponnappa and Nidhi Singh in supporting roles.

Mysaa will hit theatres worldwide on November 27.
