Greta Gerwig’s first trailer for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew has arrived, but not everyone is enchanted by what they’ve seen. Set to Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven, the footage offers a psychedelic glimpse of CS Lewis’s fantasy world, with Meryl Streep voicing Aslan, Emma Mackey playing the future White Witch and Daniel Craig stepping into the role of the magician who sets the adventure in motion.

The trailer has already sparked comparisons with Marvel films, with some viewers joking that Narnia looks more like a superhero universe than the world they remember.

“Sometimes one story is the beginning of all the others,” he tells them, setting up an adventure that will ultimately lead to the creation of Narnia.

The footage moves between strange landscapes and encounters with mythical creatures, including Fledge, a talking horse who can fly. Mackey appears as Jadis, the future White Witch and the last Queen of Charn, while the trailer builds towards a glimpse of Aslan.

“Have you ever seen a world born?” a narrator asks before Streep’s lion appears, singing Narnia into existence. It’s one of the trailer’s biggest reveals, and a casting choice that’s already become a talking point among viewers.

But there’s plenty to take in beyond the memes. The trailer introduces Digory and Polly, played by David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell, whose journey takes them into the mysterious “Wood between the Worlds”. Craig’s Andrew Ketterley, the magician of the title, gives the children magical rings that allow them to travel between different worlds.

Comments on YouTube, Reddit and X included quips such as Narnia: Rangarok, They managed to Thor: Love & Thunder Narnia and Guardians of Narnia’s Galaxy. Another viewer joked that “Aslan the Lion will return in Avengers: Doomsday.” The reactions suggest that Gerwig’s colourful, glam-rock take on the beloved fantasy series has caught viewers off guard.

The film has also attracted criticism from some conservative commentators, who objected to Gerwig directing an adaptation of a series widely read as a Christian allegory. Streep’s casting as Aslan has been another point of contention, given the lion’s association with Jesus Christ in Lewis’s books.

Gerwig, meanwhile, has spoken about the personal connection she has with the source material. At a press preview at AMC Lincoln Square in New York, the director sat down with Stephen Colbert to discuss adapting the novel, casting its young leads and bringing together a line-up that includes Streep, Craig, Carey Mulligan and Ciarn Hinds.

“I don’t remember a time I didn’t know the books,” Gerwig said. “I wouldn’t be who I am without these books.”

About Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew

Based on Lewis’s seven-book series, The Magician’s Nephew is the story that comes first chronologically, exploring the origins of Narnia before the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The film follows Digory and Polly as they stumble into a world far stranger than their own, with their choices helping set the stage for the stories that follow.

Alongside McKenna, Campbell, Craig, Streep and Mackey, the cast includes Carey Mulligan, Ciarn Hinds, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will be released in cinemas and IMAX on February 12, 2027.
