Sydney Kings assistant coach and co-owner Andrew Bogut has been fined $9500 for body-shaming the Adelaide 36ers’ owner online and confronting him after an NBL championship series game.

The 36ers accused Bogut of making “persistent and repeated personal attacks” towards Grant Kelley when they lodged an official complaint with the NBL in March.

That complaint triggered an investigation under the NBL’s Code of Conduct and Social Media Policy, which resulted in Thursday’s financial penalty.

Former NBA star Bogut, considered one of Australia’s greatest-ever players, retains the right to appeal the sanction.

“We are aware the NBL has sanctioned and issued a fine to Assistant Coach Andrew Bogut regarding commentary during the final series,” the Kings wrote in a statement.”The club is supporting Andrew throughout this process and no further comment will be made at this time.”

During the 2025/26 championship series between Sydney and Adelaide, Bogut shared an image to Twitter that appeared to imply a likeness between Kelley and Peter Griffin, the protagonist on the animated series Family Guy.

He also insinuated on his Instagram story that Kelley had not confronted him after the third match of the series because he was on his way to fast-food outlet Hungry Jack’s.

Bogut also reportedly made comments about Kelley’s weight immediately after the series’ second game during an altercation between the two.

The Kings won the championship series – and a sixth NBL title – with an overtime victory in the decisive fifth game in early April.

Bogut remains on the coaching staff for the 2026/27 season, when the Kings welcome back star players Xavier Cooks, Kendric Davis, Torrey Craig and Matthew Dellavedova for their championship defence.

Key men Bryce Cotton, Isaac Humphries, John Jenkins and Zylan Cheatham remain on the books at the Sixers, who came agonisingly close to a first championship since 2002.
