All India NR Congress (AINRC) candidate Ashok Anand has won the Thattanchavady Assembly bypoll in Puducherry, defeating Congress candidate E Vinayagam by 8,482 votes.
Anand secured 13,358 votes, while Vinayagam polled 4,876 votes, according to the final figures provided by the Election Commission of India.
The victory is significant for AINRC, an ally of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), as the bypoll was held in a constituency previously represented by Puducherry Chief Minister and AINRC founder N Rangaswamy. Rangaswamy vacated the seat after winning both Thattanchavady and Mangalam in the 2026 Assembly elections, choosing to retain Mangalam.

Thattanchavady has long been associated with Rangaswamy, who has represented the constituency multiple times. Anand’s victory returns the seat to the party founded by the Chief Minister and adds to the NDA’s presence in the Union Territory.
The bypoll was closely watched as a contest involving the ruling NDA ally and the Congress, which fielded Vinayagam.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.
