A recently formed eight-party alliance in Nepal, the Progressive Front, will hold its first joint meetings in Madhesh province next month, the grouping announced on Friday. The alliance was formed on August 9 and brings together mainly Madhesh-based parties with a shared political agenda.
The meetings will be held in Janakpur and Birgunj with the stated aims of expanding the organisation and mobilising people. The decision was taken at a province-level meeting of the front in Janakpur, chaired by Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal chairman Upendra Yadav.

The first joint meeting will be held on September 12 in Janakpur, with leaders and workers from Saptari, Siraha, Dhanusha, Mahottari and Sarlahi expected to take part. The second will be held on September 19 in Birgunj, where leaders and cadre from Bara, Parsa and Rautahat will participate. All eight districts are in Madhesh province.
According to a statement issued by the front, the meetings will discuss its future agenda, programmes and strategies. The alliance will also take decisions on expanding the organisation and forming district-level and provincial committees.
A Madhesh province coordination committee was also formed on Friday, with one representative each from the eight parties in the alliance. The Progressive Front comprises Janata Samajbadi Party, Janamat Party, Aam Janata Party, Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal, Pragatishil Loktantrik Party, Nepal Sanghiya Samjawadi Party, Bahujan Samajbadi Party Nepal and Khambuwan Rastriya Morcha. The announcement comes after all Madhesh-based parties lost in the parliamentary election held on March 5.
