A one-day-old newborn girl was allegedly sold to a couple in Maharashtra’s Virar by her 17-year-old mother’s mother and a neighbour, prompting police to register a case against several people, including doctors, officials said.
The Tulinj police rescued the baby and handed her over to her mother, bringing relief amid the shocking allegations surrounding the case.
According to the allegations, the minor girl’s mother and a woman living in the Maharashtra’s Nalasopara neighbourhood sold the newborn to a couple from Virar. The police have registered a case against the minor’s mother, the neighbour, the doctor concerned and the couple accused of buying the baby.

Meanwhile, the man accused of sexually exploiting the minor girl has been arrested.
In a separate action linked to the case, the municipal corporation sealed the private hospital concerned. Further details about the alleged transaction and the role of the accused were not immediately available.
