A newlywed couple’s mountain getaway in West Bengal’s Kalimpong district turned into a nightmare after a sudden fireball engulfed the woman during a barbecue session at a private resort in Sitong.
The incident, captured on CCTV, shows the couple sitting close to the barbecue. A man seated on the opposite side of the barbecue then gets up and appears to pour liquid from a can onto or near the fire. Within seconds, the flames flare up, sending a fireball towards Nikita Das, who was sitting nearby.

Nikita is seen engulfed in flames before falling to the ground. Her husband, Sameer Das, immediately rushes towards her in an attempt to save her. The man who poured the liquid is also seen taking off his T-shirt and using it to try to put out the flames.
RESORT STAFF RUSH TO HELP
The sudden blaze triggered panic at the resort, as staff members and others present rushed to help Nikita. She was later taken to hospital for treatment.
According to the information available, Sameer Das, a resident of Chopra, had travelled to Sitong with his wife Nikita for a holiday. The couple had got married around two months ago and were staying at a private resort in the hill destination.
What was meant to be a relaxing holiday quickly descended into chaos as the fire engulfed Nikita within seconds.
The incident has also raised questions about the safety precautions followed while conducting barbecues at private resorts, particularly the handling of inflammable liquids around open flames.
FIRE SAFETY UNDER SCRUTINY
The incident has once again brought the need for proper fire-safety measures at tourist resorts into focus. The availability of fire extinguishers, safe storage and handling of inflammable materials, and trained personnel could be crucial in preventing such incidents and responding to emergencies.
