Nicolas Cage regrets never playing golf with Sir Sean Connery.
The 62-year-old actor developed a “great relationship” with the late James Bond actor – who died in 2020 at the age of 90 – after they starred together in 1996’s The Rock, but he wishes he’d found the time to hang out with his pal on the green.
Speaking during a spotlight panel at New York Comic Con over the weekend, Nicolas said: “I was all about fishing [at the time], and I like being on my boat.
“And Sean wanted to get me on the golf course…
“He was very avuncular. He was somebody that I considered a friend. We were friends. I would visit him at his house.
“But I never went on the golf course because I just didn’t have time for that.
“I just wanted to be on my boat. I just… when I had my free time, I wanted to go fishing. And I feel to this day that I should have taken him up on it and learned how to play golf.”
While making The Rock, Nicolas admitted at the time it was a “dream” to work with one of his acting “heroes”.
He told Entertainment Tonight: “He was one of my heroes. When I was a kid, I would go see his movies and think, ‘That’s what a man should be. So to work with him, it was definitely a dream.”
The Mandy actor hailed the Hunt for Red October star his “greatest teacher in cinema” after his death.
He said in a statement at the time: “I admired Sean so much. I was happiest when I was working with him – his wisdom, humbleness and extreme honesty have guided me ever since I met him.
“He was my friend and greatest teacher in cinema. The first movie star to lead the way in combining drama, action-adventure and comedy. He did it all effortlessly and with dignity. Maestro, you will be missed.”
He also previously reflected on how seeing Sean as Bond had a “huge influence” on his own decision to be an actor.
He said in 2016: “Going as far back as Dr. No, which I saw at a drive-in movie theatre with my father, I knew I wanted to be like that.”
