India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said the team is planning to make a couple of changes for the third ODI against Afghanistan. Having already secured a 2-0 lead in the series, the hosts will be aiming for a clean sweep when the third ODI is played on Friday, June 19, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Ten Doeschate revealed that Nitish Reddy is available for selection after missing the second ODI in Lucknow due to soreness in his left thigh. The former Netherlands batter also indicated that Arshdeep Singh could be rested for the dead rubber, while the batting unit is also expected to undergo at least one change, if not more.

No, we will be making a few changes from the first two games. Part of the brief coming into the series was that we wanted to try a few different combinations and give everyone a fair share of games.

“Someone like Arshdeep has bowled very well in the first two games; he can probably take a rest tomorrow, and the same goes for one of the batters. We’ll swap them out and go back to playing a slightly different side,” Ten Doeschate said in the pre-match press conference.

“Nitish, he probably could have played the last game as well. But he will be good to go for tomorrow’s game.”

PRESSURE ON YASHASVI JAISWAL

Ten Doeshchate also spoke on Yashasvi Jaiswal, talking about the immense composition due to the quality of Indian batting. Jaiswal returned to the ODI setup after six months and played the second ODI as opener. But he failed to make use of the opportunity and after getting out for four to Mohammad Saleem.

Despite scoring an unbeaten 116 against South Africa in Visakhapatnam last year, Jaiswal faces a tough battle for a place in India’s ODI XI. Ishan Kishan’s return and century in Lucknow have strengthened his case, while Virat Kohli is expected to reclaim the No.3 spot once fit.

When Kohli returns, it would see Shubman Gill move back to opening alongside Rohit Sharma, with Kishan and Shreyas Iyer likely occupying the middle order. As a result,

Jaiswal has limited opportunities to cement his place in a highly competitive batting lineup.

“He is someone who is waiting in the wings because of the quality and the depth we have in that position. But I certainly get the feeling that the first priority is always to win the series and to put your best team out,” Ten Doeschate said.

“Jaiswal does get a few chances and it is incredibly tough because there is so much quality. But he is one of those guys where he does get the right chances like this, he is going to have to score runs. That is just the nature of Indian cricket,” Ten Doeschate added.

India won the rain-curtailed first ODI by seven wickets before registering a commanding 171-run victory in Lucknow to seal the series 2-0. The hosts will now aim to complete a clean sweep in the third ODI before travelling to the United Kingdom, where they are set to take on Ireland and England in their upcoming assignments.
