Two days ago, a leaked video gave us a first look of Apple’s camera AirPods – a new AirPods device that came with cameras for Visual Intelligence. Originally, the company was expected to launch the camera AirPods with the iPhone 18 Pro next month. But it seems that may no longer be the case.
As per a report from Bloomberg, Apple has postponed the launch of the camera AirPods to 2027, instead of launching alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series. It is believed that the company faced supply chain and software issues when it tried to bring it to production earlier this year.

The camera AirPods were recently leaked via a demo video in a developer version of macOS. This had sparked speculation that the camera AirPods were on track to be launched next month. Do note that we don’t know the official name of the camera AirPods. Though it may be called “AirPods Ultra” according to leaks.
Apple’s camera AirPods will not take pictures
In the leaked demo video, we could see a person pointing a book towards the AirPods, likely to learn more about it via Visual Intelligence or Siri AI. As per the report, Apple is using low-resolution cameras in the AirPods that are not designed to take photographs or record video.
Instead, they are intended to scan the surrounding environment and provide context for Apple’s AI features. While this should make the camera AirPods less intrusive than some smartglasses like the Meta Ray-Bans, some on social media remain skeptical, calling the camera AirPods “pervertpods.”
Apple has been working on two versions of AirPods with cameras – B790 and B798. The B790 is tipped to be a modified version of AirPods Pro 3 with cameras and AI features, while B798 is a new generation of AirPods Pro with cameras. The report adds that the B790 version was on Apple’s 2026 roadmap until recently and is the one shown in the leaked video.
While the report says that we may see the camera AirPods sometime next year, the exact timeline remains unclear as of now. Apple is expected to launch the vanilla iPhone 18 in early 2027, the company can potentially showcase the camera AirPods at the same time, but there is no confirmation just yet.
