Allu Arjun may be known for his rugged mass-hero image, but one of his most talked-about transformations came when he slipped into a saree, jewellery and makeup for the Gangamma Jathara sequence in Pushpa 2: The Rule. Looking back at the experience, the actor described dressing as a woman as “the most alpha thing” he has ever done.
“I would say the most alpha thing I’ve ever done is to play a woman,” Allu Arjun recently told Forbes. In Pushpa 2, Allu Arjun’s Pushpa Raj undergoes a dramatic transformation for the Gangamma Jathara ritual, a traditional festival in parts of Andhra Pradesh held in honour of Goddess Gangamma.

The week-long celebration commemorates the goddess’s victory over a local ruler and features devotees dressing up in elaborate costumes and feminine attire as part of the rituals. Pushpa appears in a saree, elaborate jewellery, makeup and blue body paint for the sequence.
Why the Gangamma Jathara look stood out
The Gangamma Jathara sequence became one of the defining visual moments of Pushpa 2. Allu Arjun’s transformation involved extensive makeup, jewellery, a saree and blue body paint, creating a stark contrast with the familiar Pushpa Raj look.
However, the sequence was not included merely for its visual impact. The ritual is connected to the film’s narrative, making the transformation an integral part of Pushpa’s journey.
The performance also required Allu Arjun to navigate a difficult middle ground — convincingly portraying the feminine aspects of the ritual while retaining the aggression and swagger associated with his character.
Pushpa changed Allu Arjun’s outlook
The Pushpa franchise has transformed Allu Arjun into one of Indian cinema’s biggest pan-India stars. Pushpa 2 went on to become one of the highest-grossing Indian films, taking the reach of Pushpa Raj even further.
Reflecting on the impact of the franchise, Allu Arjun said, “Pushpa’s success has inspired me to take Indian cinema to another level.”
The success has also paved the way for the actor to take on increasingly ambitious projects.
What’s next for Allu Arjun?
Allu Arjun will next be seen in filmmaker Atlee’s science-fiction film titled Raaka, which is produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures. The film stars Deepika Padukone alongside Allu Arjun and is expected to release in December 2027.
The project is reportedly being made on a budget of over Rs 1,000 crore and is expected to be one of the biggest Indian productions in terms of scale.
The actor also has AA23 with filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj in the pipeline. Meanwhile, Pushpa 3: The Rampage is expected to continue the story of Pushpa Raj. However, no announcement has been made about the thirs part yet.
