North Korea has successfully tested a new torpedo system that uses artificial intelligence for target detection and guidance, state media reported on Saturday.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the weapon, tested on Thursday, was a “super-speed, precisely guided” torpedo system named Zam-2.0. However, it did not provide details on how artificial intelligence was used in the weapon.

According to the report, the test also verified the torpedo’s propulsion systems, which were developed following more than 180 tests over the past five years.

South Korea’s military, which has frequently accused Pyongyang of exaggerating its military capabilities, did not immediately comment on the report.

NORTH KOREA STEPS UP NAVAL WEAPONS TESTS

North Korea has intensified its weapons demonstrations in recent weeks, including its first underwater-launched missile tests in nearly three years.

Leader Kim Jong Un has increasingly focused on developing the country’s naval capabilities following years of emphasis on ballistic missile development.

Experts believe the missile tests conducted on Wednesday likely involved a submarine that has yet to be deployed. Pyongyang has said the submarine is designed to launch nuclear weapons.

North Korea also tested hypersonic missile systems with varying ranges on September 20 and October 3, as it seeks to expand its arsenal of weapons designed to overwhelm missile defence systems in South Korea and Japan.

Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of Kim Jong Un, claimed that the missiles tested on October 3 also used artificial intelligence technology.

DOUBTS OVER NORTH KOREA’S AI WEAPONS CAPABILITIES

Some experts, however, remain sceptical about the extent of North Korea’s advances in artificial intelligence-powered weapons.

While the country is likely improving its guidance software, experts have questioned whether its weapons possess advanced digital capabilities, including autonomous target designation.

NUCLEAR TALKS REMAIN AT A STANDSTILL

Kim Jong Un has halted diplomatic engagement and cooperation with South Korea in recent years, declaring the neighbouring country a permanent enemy.

Meanwhile, nuclear negotiations between North Korea and the United States remain stalled after years of deadlock.
