It’s not all that often that the 5:30 Saturday clash is the match of the round, but that will indeed be the case when top-of-the-table Penrith and 10th-placed Canberra meet again at Mudgee’s Glen Willow Oval today. Riding a four-game winning streak, the Raiders need the win to stay in the finals race; while the Panthers will remain two points in front at the top of the table if they prevail.
You may recall that in the corresponding game last year – dubbed “the Miracle of Mudgee” – the Raiders pulled off a win so exciting that Cooper Cronk on Fox Sports declared it “the most remarkable finish to a golden-point game I have ever witnessed.”
Penrith halfback Nathan Cleary tried to win the game in extra time, but his field-goal attempt struck an upright. Raiders winger Jed Stuart grabbed the bouncing ball and passed it to Ethan Strange, who bolted 70 metres upfield and fed Kaeo Weekes in support to score the sensational match-winning try (see video below).
