Residents have been warned to take action to protect lives and property after a bushfire broke out near a territory township.
Bushfires NT issued an advice alert late on Saturday afternoon for a blaze burning on both sides of Darwin River Road about 60km south of the Northern Territory capital.
It followed an earlier watch and act warning urging Darwin River residents to enact bushfire survival plans and monitor conditions.
The fire was, at the time, just two kilometres from the Darwin River Tavern and moving northwest towards Meade Road.
Firefighting aircraft were in action to try to contain the fire.
“For the safety of firefighting crews and other vehicles, drivers in the area are urged to slow down, turn on headlights and drive safely for the conditions,” the watch and act alert said.
