More than 40 girl students were hospitalised in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria after they fell ill during a Tiranga Yatra (Tricolour rally) organised by the district administration ahead of the upcoming Independence Day. The episode unfolded on Thursday, August 13.

Doctors treating the students attributed the deterioration in their health to intense heat and sunlight. The schoolchildren complained of dizziness during the march, while some fainted after reaching the stadium where the rally concluded.

Several ambulances were rushed to the stadium and the affected students were taken to the emergency department of the Maharshi Devraha Baba Autonomous State Medical College, officials said.

Doctors said the students’ condition deteriorated due to heat and the prolonged exposure to the sun. “All of them were out of danger and receiving treatment,” an official said.

District Magistrate Madhusudan Hulgi, along with other officials, visited the emergency department to check on the girls.

Deoria’s Chief Development Officer (CDO), Rajesh Kumar Singh, said that the children had experienced health problems because of the heat and that there was no need to panic.

He said the children were gradually recovering and were being discharged from the hospital.

Meanwhile, DM Hulgi stated, “When we started in the morning, all the children participated with full energy. And in that excitement, they did not pay attention to drinking water and hydrating themselves. But I will not blame the children for this… There was a lot of heat today. Due to which such a situation arose.”

The Tiranga Yatra began around 11 am and was attended by around 5,000 students from several schools. Some of them began feeling dizzy on the way due to the heat and humidity.

Teachers gave the students water and provided immediate relief. After reaching the stadium, the condition of several more of them deteriorated and some fainted.
