Pakistani security forces have killed 12 militants linked to Baloch insurgent groups in Balochistan’s Kalat district, the army said on Friday. In a separate incident the same day, police and paramilitary forces said they foiled an attempt by dozens of armed militants to take control of Bhag city in the province, in which five people were injured.

The Inter-Services Public Relations, the media wing of the military, said the 12 militants were killed during intelligence-based operations carried out on Wednesday. It also said the attackers in Bhag targeted a police station, the assistant commissioner’s office and a bank, but were forced to retreat after a gun battle.

According to the military statement, “During the conduct of the operation, the terrorists’ hideout was identified, monitored and busted through prompt surgical action and 12 terrorists were killed.” It added that a cache of ammunition and improvised explosive devices was destroyed at the site.

The statement said a relentless counter-terrorism campaign under ‘Azm-i-Istehkam’ by security forces and law enforcement agencies would “continue at full pace to wipe out the menace of foreign-sponsored and supported terrorism from the country”.

Meanwhile, two policemen were among five people injured after militants attacked the police station, the assistant commissioner’s office and a bank in Bhag on Friday. Shahid Rind, a spokesperson for the Balochistan government, said about 40 militants carried out the attack using “heavy weapons, rocket launchers, machine guns, sniper rifles and hand grenades”.

Rind said the militants failed to take control of the Bhag police station or seize weapons from the facility as security forces engaged them in a gun battle for nearly two hours and forced them to withdraw. The incidents involved separate operations in Balochistan in which 12 militants were killed and an attack on Bhag was repelled, leaving five people injured.
