Paul Dano has signed on to star in remake of thriller Possession, opposite Margaret Qualley and Callum Turner.

According to Deadline, the 42-year-old actor will take on an as yet unknown role in the film, being helmed by Smile writer-director Parker Finn.

Finn has written the script for the Paramount movie – a new take on the 1981 supernatural film – and will also produce, alongside Robert Pattinson, Jonathan Fass, Roy Lee and Andrew Childs.

Marc Bienstock will executive produce.

Possession starred Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani, who starts exhibiting disturbing behaviour after asking her husband for a divorce.

Adjani won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in the film, which has become a cult favourite among movie fans.

In an interview with The Guardian recently, Dano explained that one of his “favourite things” about being an actor is that “you’re always learning, but also unlearning”.

He continued: “I’ve always wanted to stay in touch with my intuition – the part of me that isn’t thinking.

“If anything, I prepare more now than ever, because you pick up tools and want to keep your curiosity alive.”

Dano went on to say that being a “kind person” has helped him in Hollywood.

He explained: “I love collaboration and I love making friends. Most of us are sensitive people, so I try to find the empathy for my characters, whether they’re ‘good’ or ‘bad’.

“It’s important not to approach them with judgment. Even the Riddler has his own subjective point of view of what he believes in, so I try to find an emotional way into that.

“There’s always a piece of you in every character, whether you like it or not, so you have to ask: what piece of you is at work, and why are you stoking that flame?”

He was also asked what he would tell his 10-year-old self, to which he replied that he should have “had more fun”.

He added: “I started working young and I was a fairly serious kid. There’s a great Aldous Huxley quote: ‘It’s dark because you are trying too hard. Lightly child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly.’.

“I’m able to enjoy my work and my life more now than 20 years ago. So I would say: ‘Have more fun as a 10-year-old. Play more basketball. Play in your band. Go be with your friends.’”
