Perth Glory coach Adam Griffiths continues to win fans over with his quirky wit after his side nabbed their first win of the season on Sunday.
Glory knocked four unanswered goals past Adelaide United at HBF Park to register their first points of the new campaign.
However, when asked about the performance by The West Australian’s soccer writer Ben Smith, Griffiths offered up another classic left-field answer.
“I just felt that the jackets that we wore out onto the pitch were exceptional. Retro style, looking good,” he said in his post-game press conference.
The Glory sported retro jackets as they came out of the tunnel on Sunday as part of their 30th anniversary celebrations, with a striking combination of white, purple and faded yellow proving a winner with the fans and the boss alike.
When asked, “Can you put the entire performance down to the jackets?”, Griffiths doubled down on his answer.
“Why not? Look good. Feel good,” he said.
Griffiths then turned more serious, praising his side and suggesting they could have been even better.
“No, the boys performed well in front of a loud shed, and there’s a lot of upside from the performance as well. We still had a few more goals that I think we could have taken and we have to keep improving,” he said.
Griffiths gained a reputation for being a bit of a character last season as interim manager at Glory and has proven that taking over the role full-time will not cage his unique personality and views on the game.
Glory finished 10th last season, but the side is determined to return to finals and will take plenty of confidence out of Sunday’s triumph after starting the season with two disappointing defeats.
Perth will next host winless Newcastle Jets at HBF Park on Saturday after becoming one of seven sides to sit with one win from three.
