A mother has been charged with careless driving causing death, following a fatal crash which led to the death of her four-year-old daughter and injury of her eight-year-old son.
Saoirse Wynne, 33, was driving a grey Holden Astra east on Boardman Rd at Canning Vale, in Perth’s southeast, when her vehicle collided with an orange Ford Mustang travelling north on Garden St about 3.15pm on June 3 this year.
Ms Wynne and her two children, aged 4 and 8, were rushed to hospital for medical treatment.
Four-year-old Layna Leavy, 4, died in hospital from her injuries.
Major Crash investigators have now charged the Southern River mum with several offences, including careless driving causing death, careless driving causing grievous bodily harm or bodily harm, failing to ensure a passenger aged four to seven years was restrained in an approved child restraint and no authority to drive (never held).
A GoFundMe set up in Layna’s memory following the crash raised more than $100,000 for her family to help with funeral costs and time away from work while they grieved the loss of their “beautiful girl”.
A family member said on the tribute page they moved to Perth from Ireland in 2024 to build a new life.
“In less than two years, Layna had already woven herself into the hearts of so many, here in Australia, and across the community they had left behind in Ireland,” a family member said.
“The flowers, teddy bears, and dolls placed at the crash site by friends and strangers demonstrate the mark this little girl made on the world in just four short years.
“The outpouring of love from the local Perth community and from Ireland is a testament of the impact this little girl had on so many lives and a reminder that Layna was, and always will be, deeply loved.”
Ms Wynne is due to appear before the Armadale Magistrates Court on September 29.
