A fisherman in the Philippines found himself in a rather unexpected struggle when an octopus latched onto his face and refused to let go, leaving him desperately trying to pull its tentacles away.
The now-viral video was shared by the Viral Press on Instagram. In the clip, the fisherman was seen struggling as the octopus wrapped several of its tentacles tightly around his face.

He repeatedly tried to pull them away, but the animal held on firmly and showed little interest in letting go.
After several attempts, the fisherman slowly managed to loosen the octopus’s grip and pull it away from his face. He eventually freed himself and dropped the animal back into the water.

An octopus has eight arms lined with hundreds of suction cups, which allow it to firmly attach itself to surfaces and objects. Each suction cup can create a seal against a surface, while the animal can independently control many of them.
As pointed out by several marine experts, their suction cups are also highly sensitive and help them explore their surroundings. They contain sensory cells that allow the animals to detect chemicals and textures through touch and taste, meaning an octopus can essentially “feel” and chemically investigate what it is touching.
That combination of suction and muscular control explained why the fisherman had such a difficult time pulling the tentacles away. The octopus was not simply holding onto his face with its arms; its suction cups were creating multiple points of attachment at the same time.
And while the fisherman’s encounter looked chaotic, the octopus was most likely simply reacting to an unusual situation and attempting to maintain its grip on something it had come into contact with.
