Chennai: The Madras High Court on Friday, October 30, issued a notice to Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) co-convenor Saurav Das in a public interest litigation (PIL) petition seeking details of his background and the cancellation of his passport and Aadhaar card.
A division bench of Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan sent the notice while hearing the petition by R Ganesh Kumar of Chennai.
Identifying Das as “Yogesh Sharma alias Saurav Das,” the plea said he made derogatory comments about the judiciary, the Chief Justice of India, and other Supreme Court judges.
It sought an investigation into Das’ personal details, including his parents’ information and background. The petitioner additionally sought directions to cancel the CJP leader’s passport and Aadhaar card if he is found guilty in the probe.
PIL seeks parents’ information, Das’ address
The plea requested directives to the Centre and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and other relevant authorities to conduct a “detailed, thorough and fair probe” of Das’ identity and background.
The petitioner’s counsel referred to documents regarding Das’ identity and addresses at the hearing. The High Court bench examined the documents attached to the plea and subsequently sought clarification about certain details.
The petitioner further sought directions to the Secretary of Electronics and Information Technology to block Instagram and X handles with the name Saurav Das. He asked the bench to restrain Das from making the alleged statements against the judiciary.
The matter will be heard again in six weeks.
Moment of collective shame: Asutosh Ranka
Reacting to the High Court notice, CJP co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka said, “What’s happening here is a moment of collective shame.”
“Hounding someone just because you can’t stand their work – to what extent are we going to tolerate all of this?” he wrote on X.
