Fast food giant Pizza Hut has been dealt a fresh blow in its fight with one of Australia’s major cities – but is not taking no for an answer.
The US pizza chain is bidding to keep one of its Sydney branches open longer into the night, in a move that would see punters able to grab a slice until 3am any day of the week.
It has previously seen attempts at changing the branch opening hours knocked back by Sydney City Council.
And it appears its latest bid is destined for the same fate.
The bid relates to its Elizabeth St takeaway in Surry Hills, which currently is allowed to open from 11.30am until 10pm Sunday to Wednesday and until midnight Thursday to Saturday.
However, the attempts to open until 3am on any given day has been met with fury from neighbours fearing additional noise and odours until the early morning.
A previous bid was shot down by SCC on December 1 last year, which had requested to open until midnight Sunday to Wednesday and until 2am Thursday to Sunday.
A further attempt in May was also refused, sparking the latest twist in the saga.
But the council looks set to stand firm, with council officers recommending the latest scheme be given the same end result.
“The proposed amendments, if approved, will have unacceptable ongoing negative impacts on the amenity of neighbouring residential properties,” a Sydney City Council officer wrote in a report.
“There is sufficient evidence that the proposed hours of operation are not suitable for the site and the proposed modifications are not in the public interest.”
