Police in North Carolina were left doing a double take after two men were spotted cruising down a city street on an unlikely mode of transport: an actual couch.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said officers stopped the pair last week after seeing them travelling along S. Tryon Street on furniture.

“It was certainly a first when our officers stopped two gentlemen traveling down S. Tryon Street on a couch… Yes, an actual couch,” the department wrote on social media.

A photograph shared by police showed the couch balanced across two electric scooters, with the men apparently using the unusual setup to travel along the road.

While officers appeared amused by the sight, they warned that the stunt could have created a serious distraction for other motorists.

“While we appreciate the creativity, we do have to remind everyone: no matter what you’re ‘driving’ (using that term extremely loosely), please think about safety first,” police wrote.

They urged anyone considering a similarly unconventional ride to think about whether it belonged on a road alongside ordinary traffic.

“Ask yourself: Should this be on a road… with actual cars… will the sheer shock of seeing this on the road cause other drivers to lose focus and drive unsafely?” the department said.

“If the answer feels even slightly like ‘yes,’ maybe rethink the ride,” officers added.

It was not clear whether the two men were issued citations over their bizarre journey.

Police ended their warning with a joke aimed at the unlikely vehicle.

“As a rule — probably best to leave the mobile furniture displays to IKEA,” they quipped.

The incident has nevertheless provided a reminder that unusual road behaviour can pose risks even when there is no obvious intention to cause trouble.

And while the couch may have offered plenty of seating, it seems it was never quite designed to be a road vehicle.
