Josh Hazlewood became the final member of the “Big Four” to reach the 300-wicket milestone for Australia in Test cricket on his stunning return from injury.
The 35-year-old’s haul of 6-89 in the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin made him the ninth Australian bowler to reach the 300-wicket milestone.
In his first Test since July last year, Hazlewood more than vindicated his recall to the team after an Achilles tendon injury kept him out of the Ashes series last summer.
Hazlewood made it an awesome foursome of bowlers in the current team to reach 300 Test wickets, with Nathan Lyon (568), Mitchell Starc (435) and Pat Cummins (316) having already reached the mark.
“You don’t really think about those sort of milestones when you’re playing,” Hazlewood told Channel Seven.”I guess it’s probably something you look back on at the end.”But I guess just to see the other names there, and I’m playing with three of them, so yeah, it’s pretty cool.”
Cummins said before the Test at Marrara Stadium that it was a tough call to leave regular top performer Scott Boland out of the Australian side.
Hazlewood’s overall record and key contributions to Australia’s wins since 2014 got him the nod.
The last time Hazlewood took six wickets in an innings was in Bangalore against India in 2017, when he claimed 6-67.
As the pitch flattened out and Bangladeshis got on top in Darwin, Hazlewood stil asked questions with his probing line and length from 196cm.
His 300th Test wicket was dangerous allrounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz (65), who was caught behind by Alex Carey slashing outside off stump.
Bangladesh was eventually dismissed for 426, taking a 228-run first-innings lead after Australia made 198 on day one.
