The landlord of one of Britain’s most haunted pubs was spooked by the apparition of a ghostly coachman in broad daylight.
Geoff Fiddler, who owns the The Skirrid Mountain Inn near Abergavenny in Wales, has opened up about the boozer’s haunted history revealing there are plenty of spirits said to be lurking around the bar including the spectre of a woman who is buried just metres away from the building.
He told Wales Online: “The main ‘resident ghost’ is a lady called Fanny Price who died in the 1800s. Her gravestone is perfectly visible just 300 meters away up the road.
“Before she’s seen or sensed, there’s a strong smell of lavender perfume – the kind you associate with your grandmother, that sort of musty, lavender smell – and the crinkling of a dress.”
Geoff had his own spooky experience at the pub – but it wasn’t with resident ghost Fanny Price.
He said: “It was daytime and it was the sort of figure you see on a Toby jug – a coachman with a tri-cornered hat and almost like a long, scarlet coat on.
“People always asked if I was scared, and for some reason, I wasn’t.
“The thought of it scares me, but in that moment, it was more amazement than fright. It was over in a glance, and over the years, I’ve tried to convince myself that I didn’t see it, but I know I did.”
It comes after another spooky UK pub – The Horseshoe in London’s Clerkenwell – was bought up by former James Bond star Daniel Craig.
The actor is among the new landlords of the boozer, which came with its own ghost called Gilbert, who is believed to be the ghost of a long-dead London hangman – who haunts the pub’s beer cellar.
Craig joked to The Times newspaper: “I don’t know what he drinks but we might have to leave a pint down there: ‘Here you are Gilbert’.”
The actor is taking over the running of the pub from former landlady Pauline Tucker, who is retiring from the publican business, and she revealed GIlbert is mostly invisible but people often feel his presence.
She told the publication: “You don’t see him. You feel him.”
