A 24-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad died by suicide after she was allegedly humiliated and subjected to mental harassment during a panchayat meeting convened over the disappearance of a man she was in contact with.
The victim was identified as Shidra and the man who went missing as Mohammad Sameer.
According to Shidra’s family, when Sameer went missing earlier this week, his family allegedly accused her of kidnapping him and raised the issue before a community panchayat.

The family claims that during the panchayat proceedings, members of Sameer’s family abused and humiliated Shidra in public, leaving her deeply distressed.
Traumatised by the incident, the woman allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday night by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her home.
The situation escalated on Wednesday after her body was brought back home. Angry family members and local residents demanded action against those they held responsible for her death.
Protesters allegedly attempted to block a road by placing the body on it, triggering a tense confrontation with police personnel who arrived at the scene to disperse the crowd and restore order.
During the protest, a scuffle broke out between protesters and police officers.
The case, however, took another turn during the police investigation when it emerged that Sameer had already returned to the colony two days earlier.
According to investigators, he had not been missing but had been taken by Ghaziabad Police for questioning in connection with another case.
Police said Shidra had been informed that Sameer had returned, but her family maintains that the humiliation she suffered during the panchayat continued to affect her.
The family has also alleged in its complaint that Sameer had exploited the woman by promising marriage.
A probe into the case is currently underway.
